Identity theft has shot to the top of the
government's list of the most common consumer
fraud complaints. The Federal Trade Commission
said of the more than 200,000 complaints made to
law enforcement agencies and consumer groups last
year, 42 percent involved identification theft.
That's when someone uses personal information,
such as your credit card or Social Security
number, to steal money or commit fraud in your
name. Privacy advocates have said that as many as
750,000 people are being victimized by identity
theft each year.
